My Story

My father came to the United States from a small town in Mexico with a 6th grade education, a commitment to hard work, and hope for the American Dream. He taught me to dream big, treat people right, and not let anything stand in my way. From my mother and my tias, I draw my strength and independent mindset. I come from a line of tough Texas women.

My Education

From the barrio to the courtroom and the Texas House of Representatives, my pathway was paved because of my parents’ sacrifice and a good education. Driving from the barrio to the school I attended in the wealthy part of town opened my eyes to the wealth gap in our city and the importance of investing in our public schools. The quality of one’s education should not be determined by a zip code.

Life as a Public Servant

During my two terms in the Texas House of Representatives, I’ve passed 16 bills into law, including the historic Lavinia Masters Act to tackle the backlog of thousands of untested rape kits in Texas. I serve as Vice Chair for the House Committee on the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence and as a member on the House Committee on Corrections. I was named Democratic Co-Chair for the bi-partisan Dallas Area Legislative Delegation. In 2019, I was named one of the “Best Legislators” in Texas by Texas Monthly, the “Best Legislator” by the Dallas Observer, and “Legislator of the Year” by the State Bar of Texas Hispanic Issues Section.

Justice for Survivors

When people ask me why the majority of our bills are focused on issues that directly impact women, I answer that we have to make up for the decades of inaction that have not addressed the needs of the women of our state. We must fight for justice for women that have survived sexual and domestic violence so that our girls know that the laws of this state of Texas are written for them and by them.

K-12 and Higher Education

My parents instilled in me the value of working hard and taught me that education was the key to the American Dream. I know the value of a good education and want to make sure every child has the opportunity to succeed.

Equal Pay for Equal Work

More families than ever rely on women’s wages to put food on the table, pay for their children’s education, and save for retirement. Equal pay helps families, businesses & our economy. As 1 of the 35 women in the 150-member Texas House of Representatives, it is my responsibility and privilege to defend and protect the rights of Texas women. When women are paid the same as their male counterparts for the same work, the whole family benefits; and when the whole family benefits, Texas benefits, too.

Serving our Veterans

In 2017, I had the honor to introduce legislation to designate June 12th as Women Veterans Day in Texas. Here in our state, we have the highest number of Women Veterans in the nation. We have made a commitment to protect our soldiers like they protect us. My commitment to Veterans is steadfast, and I will continue to advocate for legislation to honor and protect our Veterans.

“We began this journey almost five years ago with little more than the audacity to believe that we could beat out an incumbent with a war chest twice the size of ours. Today, two legislative sessions later, I am running for re-election with that same audacity – the audacity to fight for a better tomorrow.”
